The month runs 29 or 30 days, and which one it will be is not known until the Shawwal moon is looked for on the evening of the 29th. A printed timetable can only assume.

Suhoor ends at Fajr and Iftar is at Maghrib. That is the position of the great majority of scholars. Some communities also print an imsak a few minutes before Fajr as a margin of safety — that is a precaution people adopt, not the ruling itself, and the fast is not invalidated by eating up to Fajr.

These are astronomical calculations, not observations. Expect a few minutes of difference against another timetable for the same city, and follow your local mosque wherever the two disagree.

Timetable settings

Ramadan is the ninth Hijri month. Its Gregorian dates move about eleven days earlier each year.

The method sets the sun angles used for Fajr and Isha. Different authorities adopt different angles, and that is the main reason two timetables for the same city can differ by several minutes.

Length of the month

Nobody knows in advance whether Ramadan will run 29 or 30 days — it ends when the Shawwal moon is sighted. The Umm al-Qura calculation gives 29 days for this year, which is the default here. Choose 30 if you would rather print the extra row and cross it out.

Asr calculation

Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its own length plus the midday shadow in the majority view, and twice its length in the Hanafi view. This changes Asr only — Suhoor and Iftar are untouched.

Minute adjustments

Add or subtract minutes from any prayer to match the timetable your mosque already publishes. Adjusting Fajr moves the Suhoor ending time; adjusting Maghrib moves Iftar.

There is deliberately no logo upload. An image picked here could not be embedded reliably in the printed sheet or the PDF without first uploading it to a server, and a timetable with a broken logo box is worse than one with no logo at all. Print onto headed paper, or drop the logo in yourself afterwards.

Print and export

Printing is laid out for A4 portrait and repeats the column headers on every page. The PDF and CSV files are written in English: the built-in PDF fonts cannot shape Arabic or Urdu, and a sheet of broken glyphs is worse than an English one.

How the Suhoor and Iftar times are worked out

Both are sun positions rather than clock conventions. Iftar is at Maghrib: the moment the disc of the sun has fully set below the horizon where you are. Suhoor ends at Fajr: the moment the first true light of dawn spreads along the horizon, an event defined by how far the sun still sits below the horizon.

Maghrib can be computed geometrically — sunset for your latitude, longitude and date, with the standard corrections for atmospheric refraction and the apparent size of the sun. Every calculation method agrees on it, which is why Iftar times rarely differ by more than a minute between timetables.

Fajr is the contested one. It occurs when the sun is a set number of degrees below the horizon, and authorities do not agree on the number: the Muslim World League uses 18°, the Islamic Society of North America 15°, Umm al-Qura 18.5°, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey 19.5°, and the University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi 18°. One degree is several minutes of clock time, more in summer and at higher latitudes. That is why your Suhoor ending time depends on which method you select above.

Above roughly 48° of latitude the geometry can fail in summer: the sun never dips far enough below the horizon, so the Fajr and Isha angles are never reached at all. This tool applies the middle-of-the-night rule at high latitudes, one of the accepted solutions, which splits the interval between sunset and sunrise. Ramadan currently falls in the northern winter so few timetables are affected today, but it will matter again as Ramadan drifts back into the summer months.

A worked example

Take London for Ramadan 1448 AH. The Umm al-Qura calendar puts the first day on February 8, 2027. With the Muslim World League method and its 18° Fajr angle, Suhoor ends at 05:34 AM and Iftar falls at 05:02 PM — a fast of about 11h 28m.

By day 29 of the same month the sun has moved on: Suhoor ends at 04:40 AM and Iftar comes at 05:53 PM, a fast of about 13h 13m. Across the month the Suhoor time creeps earlier and Iftar creeps later, because Ramadan currently falls while the northern days are lengthening towards spring.

Switch to the Islamic Society of North America’s 15° Fajr angle and the Iftar time will not move at all, while the Suhoor ending time shifts later by roughly a quarter of an hour. Nothing about the sun changed — only the definition of when dawn counts as having begun.

Common questions

What time does Suhoor end?

Suhoor ends at the start of Fajr, the beginning of the dawn prayer: from that moment you stop eating and drinking and the fast has begun. There is no fixed clock time. It depends on your latitude, the date, and the Fajr angle your authority uses, so it moves by a minute or two every day and can differ by a quarter of an hour between two timetables for the same city. Generate the timetable above for the city you are actually in rather than borrowing one from elsewhere.

Is Iftar at Maghrib or at sunset?

They are the same moment. Maghrib begins once the whole disc of the sun has disappeared below the horizon, which is exactly what sunset means in prayer calculation, so a timetable listing sunset and one listing Maghrib will show the same time. The confusion usually comes from the sunrise column: that is not a fasting time at all, it only marks the end of the Fajr prayer window. Break your fast at Maghrib without waiting for the sky to darken — hastening it is the reported practice of the Prophet.

Why do mosque timetables for the same city differ by a few minutes?

Four ordinary reasons. The Fajr and Isha angles differ between calculation methods, which alone accounts for ten to twenty minutes on Fajr. Many mosques add a deliberate margin of safety, a couple of minutes onto Fajr or Maghrib, so that nobody eats past the boundary. A city is not a point, so a timetable computed for the centre is out by up to a minute at the edges. And some timetables round to the cautious side of the minute rather than to the nearest one. None of this makes either sheet wrong — follow the one your congregation prays by.

When does Ramadan start?

Ramadan begins when the new moon of the ninth Hijri month is sighted, so the start date cannot be printed in advance with certainty. Calculated calendars such as Umm al-Qura, which this tool uses, give the date astronomically and are right in most years, but countries and communities that require a local sighting routinely begin a day earlier or later — and neighbouring mosques in the same city sometimes differ. Print the timetable, but be ready to shift every row by a day if the announcement goes the other way.

How many days is Ramadan?

Twenty-nine or thirty. Hijri months follow the moon, whose cycle takes about 29.53 days, so a month cannot be a whole number of days every time. Ramadan ends when the Shawwal moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th; if it is not seen, the month completes thirty days and Eid falls the day after. That is why the length is a setting above rather than a fixed number, and why the last row of any printed timetable should be treated as provisional.
