About the Hijri calendar
The Hijri year is lunar: twelve months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 days in total, so it runs roughly eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year and its dates move steadily earlier through the seasons. Year 1 AH begins with the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Because a lunar month begins with the new crescent, the exact start of a month is a matter of observation as much as arithmetic — which is precisely why two calendars can disagree by a day.
