The Islamic Calendar 1448 AH: Key Dates for 2026–2027

The Hijri year 1448 began at the end of June 2026 — and with it, a fresh cycle of the dates that structure Muslim life: Ashura, Mawlid, the Night Journey, Ramadan, the two Eids, and Hajj. Here is your complete planning guide, with the astronomy behind the dates and why they may shift by a day.

How the Islamic Calendar Works

The Hijri calendar is purely lunar: twelve months of 29 or 30 days, following the actual sighting (or calculation) of the new crescent moon. A lunar year runs ~354 days — about 11 days shorter than the solar year — which is why Islamic dates migrate backward through the Gregorian calendar, touring every season over a 33-year cycle.

All dates below are astronomical estimates. Traditional moon-sighting can move any of them by a day, and different countries occasionally differ from each other. Always confirm locally as the date approaches.

Muharram 1448 — The Sacred Opening (began late June 2026)

  • Islamic New Year (1 Muharram): around June 26, 2026
  • Ashura (10 Muharram): around July 5–6, 2026

Muharram is one of the four sacred months. Fasting Ashura — commemorating the salvation of Musa (Moses) — expiates the sins of the previous year (Muslim 1162); pairing it with the 9th is Sunnah.

Safar and Rabi al-Awwal — Mawlid Season

  • Mawlid al-Nabi (12 Rabi al-Awwal): around August 25–26, 2026

The birthday of the Prophet ﷺ. Communities differ in how — and whether — they mark it, but the month invites every Muslim to deepen their connection with the Sirah. A fine time to read a biography of the man described as "a walking Quran."

Rajab and Sha'ban — The Ramp to Ramadan

  • Rajab begins: around late December 2026. A sacred month; the Night Journey (Isra wal-Mi'raj, 27 Rajab) falls around mid-January 2027.
  • Sha'ban begins: around late January 2027. The Prophet ﷺ fasted more in Sha'ban than any month outside Ramadan (Bukhari 1969) — the traditional training month, and the time to resolve any missed fasts from last Ramadan.

Ramadan 1448 — The Main Event

  • First fast: expected Monday, February 8, 2027 (evening of February 7 for the first Tarawih)
  • Laylat al-Qadr (sought in the last ten odd nights): early March 2027
  • Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal): around March 9–10, 2027

A February–March Ramadan means moderate fasting hours across most of the northern hemisphere — around 12–13 hours in most of Europe and North America. Northern-latitude communities get their gentlest Ramadan of the decade. Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah — The Pilgrimage Season

  • The six fasts of Shawwal: any time in the month after Eid; combined with Ramadan they equal "fasting the whole year" (Muslim 1164).
  • Hajj 2027 (8–13 Dhul-Hijjah 1448): expected around mid-May 2027
  • Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah): fasting it (for non-pilgrims) expiates two years of sins (Muslim 1162)
  • Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul-Hijjah): around May 17–18, 2027

Why Dates Shift: Sighting vs Calculation

Every "around" above exists because the tradition holds two legitimate positions:

  1. Physical sighting (rukyah): the month begins when the crescent is seen by eye — the method of the majority of countries, which is why announcements come the night before.
  2. Astronomical calculation (hisab): the month begins when the new moon's birth and visibility criteria are met mathematically — adopted by Turkey, much of Europe's councils, and North America's Fiqh Council.

Both camps root themselves in the same hadith — "Fast when you see it and break fast when you see it" (Bukhari 1909) — differing on whether seeing may be delegated to certain knowledge of the sky. Practical advice: follow your local mosque or national authority, and treat one-day differences between countries as a feature of a living tradition, not a bug.

Planning Checklist for 1448

  • Now (Muharram–Safar): clear any missed Ramadan 1447 fasts early; the queue only grows.
  • August 2026: Mawlid month — pick a Sirah book.
  • December 2026 – January 2027: Rajab; begin Ramadan fitness — sleep schedule, Quran routine.
  • February 8, 2027: first fast (expected).
  • May 2027: Arafah fast and Eid al-Adha; if Hajj is your year, bookings close far earlier — start in 2026.

Time in Islam is not a neutral grid; it has peaks. The believer who sees the year's sacred geography in advance climbs them prepared.
