Zakat & Charity: Your Essential Ramadan Giving Guide

Zakat is arithmetic before it is anything else: a threshold, a lunar year, a percentage, and eight named destinations. Most people who delay paying do so not from reluctance but because they are unsure whether their pension counts, whether their mortgage is deductible, or what today's nisab actually is. What follows walks the calculation end to end. For the philosophy behind it, see our longer piece on the ethics of giving and Zakat mastery.

The Obligation in One Paragraph

Zakat is the third pillar: an annual transfer of 2.5% of qualifying surplus wealth to recipients the Quran names. It is not charity in the discretionary sense. When the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh ibn Jabal to Yemen he told him to teach the people that Allah had enjoined upon them a charity, "taken from their rich and given to their poor" (Bukhari 1395). The framing is fiscal: a right owed, not a favour granted.

Step 1: The Nisab

Nisab is the minimum wealth you must hold before zakat is due at all. It is anchored to two commodities:

| Standard | Classical weight | Effect | |---|---|---| | Gold | 87.48 g (20 mithqal), often rounded to 85 g | Higher threshold; fewer people liable | | Silver | 612.36 g (200 dirhams), often rounded to 595 g | Lower threshold; more reaching the poor |

Multiply the weight by the market price per gram on the day you calculate. Because gold and silver have diverged enormously in relative value since the seventh century, the two standards now give very different figures. Many scholars and most relief organisations recommend the silver standard, since a lower threshold serves the recipients.

Step 2: The Hawl

Zakat falls due when qualifying wealth has been held for one lunar year (hawl). Two things follow:

  • Pick a fixed Hijri date and keep it. Many choose a date in Ramadan, which is why zakat season and Ramadan overlap in most communities — see our 1448 calendar guide for the Gregorian equivalents.
  • A lunar year is ~11 days shorter than a solar one. Anchoring zakat to a Gregorian date slowly cheats the calculation; over thirty-three years the drift costs roughly one full year's zakat.

You do not track each pound separately. If your wealth was above nisab at the start of the year and above it on your zakat date, you pay on the balance held that day, whatever the dips in between.

Step 3: What Is Zakatable

| Asset | Zakatable? | Notes | |---|---|---| | Cash — hand, current, savings | Yes | Full balance on your zakat date | | Gold and silver (bullion) | Yes | At market value, not purchase price | | Gold jewellery in personal use | Disputed | Hanafis: yes. Others: generally exempt unless excessive or held as investment | | Shares held for trading | Yes | Market value on your zakat date | | Shares held long term | Partially | Many scholars assess only the company's underlying zakatable assets | | Business stock-in-trade | Yes | Resale value of inventory | | Money owed to you, likely repaid | Yes | Add to your total | | Money owed to you, doubtful | No | Pay when received | | Pension you can access | Yes | Usually on accessible, post-tax value | | Crypto holdings | Yes | Market value | | Your home | No | Personal use | | Rental property | No | But yes on rental income still held on your zakat date | | Car, furniture, clothes, tools of your trade | No | Personal and productive use |

Liabilities: deduct immediately due debts — this month's bills, overdue payments, a credit-card balance falling due. The mainstream position is that you do not deduct the whole outstanding balance of a mortgage or student loan, only the instalments currently owed. Deducting a thirty-year mortgage would eliminate zakat for almost every homeowner, which no school intends.

Step 4: A Worked Example

Amina calculates on 15 Ramadan. Her position that morning, in local currency:

| Item | Amount | |---|---| | Cash in current account | 6,000 | | Savings account | 4,000 | | Gold jewellery beyond normal use, at market value | 3,200 | | Shares (trading portfolio) | 3,000 | | Stock in her online shop, at resale value | 2,000 | | Gross zakatable wealth | 18,200 | | Less: credit-card balance due this month | −800 | | Less: rent and utilities already owed | −1,200 | | Net zakatable wealth | 16,200 |

Her silver-standard nisab that day is roughly 500, so she is comfortably liable:

16,200 × 2.5% = 405

That is the whole calculation. Divide by 40 if you prefer — 2.5% is one fortieth, which is how the classical texts express it.

Step 5: The Eight Categories

Zakat cannot go just anywhere. The recipients are named:

"Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect it and for bringing hearts together and for freeing captives and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the stranded traveller — an obligation imposed by Allah." — Quran 9:60

  1. Al-fuqara — the poor, without sufficient means.
  2. Al-masakin — the destitute, in greater need still.
  3. Al-amilin alayha — those administering collection and distribution.
  4. Al-mu'allafati qulubuhum — those whose hearts are to be reconciled.
  5. Fi'r-riqab — freeing those in bondage; applied today to trafficking and bonded labour.
  6. Al-gharimin — those crushed by debt incurred for legitimate need.
  7. Fi sabilillah — in the cause of Allah, read narrowly or broadly by school.
  8. Ibn as-sabil — the stranded traveller, whatever their wealth at home.

What falls outside: mosque construction, general administration and funeral costs are not zakat-eligible under the majority view — fund them from sadaqah. Zakat may not go to your own dependants, since supporting them is already obligatory, though it may go to a needy adult sibling, cousin or aunt, which the scholars considered doubly rewarded.

Zakat al-Fitr Is a Different Obligation

People conflate the two every year. Zakat al-Fitr is small, per-person, food-based, and tied to Eid rather than to wealth. Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ enjoined it as one sa' of dates or barley, upon the free and the enslaved, male and female, young and old among the Muslims, to be paid before the people go out to the Eid prayer (Bukhari 1503).

  • Amount: one sa' of staple food per person, conventionally around 2.5–3 kg, or its cash value where local scholars permit payment in money.
  • Who pays: the head of the household, for every member including infants and dependants.
  • When: in the last days of Ramadan, and before the Eid prayer. Ibn Abbas reported that it purifies the fasting person from idle talk and feeds the poor; paid before the prayer it is accepted zakat, paid after it is merely an ordinary charity (Abu Dawud 1609). Set a reminder — this is the most commonly missed deadline in the Islamic year.

Zakat vs Sadaqah

| | Zakat | Sadaqah | |---|---|---| | Status | Obligatory pillar | Voluntary | | Amount | Fixed at 2.5% above nisab | Any amount, any time | | Recipients | The eight Quranic categories only | Anyone in need, any good cause | | Timing | Annually, on your hawl date | Whenever | | Form | Wealth | Wealth, effort, or a kind word |

Sadaqah is deliberately unbounded — "every good deed is charity" (Bukhari 6021) — and the Prophet ﷺ taught that wealth does not diminish through it (Muslim 2588). Sadaqah jariyah, the flowing kind — a well, a school, a text still benefiting someone — keeps earning after the giver has died.

Five Mistakes Worth Avoiding

  1. Paying on income instead of savings. Zakat is levied on what you still hold on your zakat date, not on what you earned.
  2. Forgetting the lunar drift. Fix a Hijri date and stay on it.
  3. Deducting an entire mortgage. Only the instalments currently due.
  4. Leaving zakat al-fitr to Eid morning. Pay it in the last week of Ramadan.
  5. Not checking a charity's zakat policy. Ask whether donations are ring-fenced for the eight categories.

Give in the last ten nights if you can, and let the day's structure hold the intention in place — look up your Suhoor and Iftar times and treat the hunger between them as the reminder it was designed to be. A calculation done properly, on time, to the right people beats a generous impulse acted on late.
