The Science of Salah: Understanding Astronomical Calculations

Islamic prayer times are not arbitrary; they are deeply rooted in the precision of celestial mechanics. For centuries, Muslim astronomers have refined algorithms to determine the exact moments of transition between day and night, ensuring that Salah is performed at its divinely appointed time.

The Five Transitions

Each of the five daily prayers corresponds to a specific astronomical state:

1. Fajr (The Dawn)

Fajr begins at "subh sadiq" (true dawn), which is when the first light appears horizontally across the horizon. Astronomically, this is measured by the sun's position below the horizon, typically between 12° and 18°, depending on the chosen calculation method (like MWL or ISNA).

2. Dhuhr (The Zenith)

Dhuhr commences just after the sun reaches its highest point in the sky (the Meridian). It is the moment the sun begins to decline (Zawal).

3. Asr (The Shadow)

Asr is determined by the length of an object's shadow. The standard (Shafi'i) method marks Asr when the shadow is equal to the object's height, while the Hanafi method uses twice the height.

4. Maghrib (The Sunset)

Maghrib begins immediately after the sun's disk completely disappears below the horizon.

5. Isha (The Night)

Isha starts when the "red twilight" (shafaq) disappears from the sky, typically when the sun is 17° or 18° below the horizon.

Why Location Matters

Because these times depend on the sun's angle relative to your specific coordinates, prayer times shift daily. Factors like altitude, latitude, and atmospheric refraction all play a role in the precise calculation.

At NamazZone, we use the most advanced astronomical libraries to ensure that these ancient traditions are honored with modern scientific precision, no matter where you are in the world.
